Where to Stay
Most of Dresden’s main sights and attractions are in the Innere Altstadt, the Inner Old Town. This includes the pedestrianised areas around the Frauenkirche, west towards the Opera House and Zwinger and down along the Elbe riverfront area, including Bruehl’s Terrace.
This entire area is decorated with festive lights and Christmas decorations during November and December.
Crossing the Augustus Bridge over the River Elbe, you’ll arrive at the Neustadt, the New City that isn’t really that new.
On this side of the river, there are interesting sights, with Dresdner Molkerei (a 19th-century dairy) being the highlight.
Although there are a couple of lovely Christmas markets here, the Altstadt has many more Christmas stalls and events, so I recommend staying in the Altstadt area of Dresden.
Responsible Travel Tips
- Choose eco-friendly hotels: Look for hotels that prioritise renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. Some hotels in Dresden also offer energy-efficient heating and cooling systems to help reduce their carbon footprint.
- Minimise food waste: When dining out, be mindful of portion sizes and take leftovers with you if possible. Avoid leaving uneaten food on your plate, and consider supporting restaurants that source their ingredients locally to reduce food miles.
- Embrace sustainable diets: Consider trying vegetarian or vegan options at restaurants, or visit one of the many local markets in Dresden to stock up on fresh produce for your meals.
- Opt for sustainable transport: Use public transportation or rent a bike to get around the city instead of relying on cars or taxis. Not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, but you’ll also get to experience Dresden like a local.
- Avoid flying: If possible, consider alternative modes of transportation to get to Dresden, such as trains or buses. This can significantly reduce your carbon footprint, as flying is one of the most carbon-intensive forms of travel.
- Support the local community: Look for opportunities to support local businesses, such as shops, restaurants, and artisans. You can help preserve Dresden’s unique character and culture by purchasing locally-made products and supporting local economies.
