Ljubljana is a compact city with all the main sights and attractions being close to the main square, Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg), including the Triple Bridge and Ljubljana Castle.

Staying within this historic area means you will be within walking distance to everywhere you’ll likely want to go, including the Christmas markets.

Large sections of the old town, particularly the areas along the river, are pedestrianised or limited to car traffic, so it’s safe and quiet. There are many cafes and restaurants in this area too.

You’ll also find a number of sights between the river and the beautiful Park Tivoli, which is a lovely place to visit, even in winter. Staying in any of these areas will be convenient for getting around Ljubljana.

An incredibly beautiful new hotel in Ljubljana, Hotel Heritage is located in a historic building that has been renovated to an extremely high standard. Rooms have open beams on the ceilings and stunning herringbone timber flooring. The room decor is modern and stylish, and the hotel serves a large buffet breakfast with organic food and local specialties. The hotel invests in local community and sustainability projects and supports local artists by displaying their artwork in the hotel. Hotel Heritage is located one street from the river and a 5-minute walk to Preseren Square.

Hotel Mrak
Address: Rimska cesta 4, Ljubljana
A little bit further away is Hotel Mrak, a modern, clean and comfortable hotel that is less than a 10-minute walk to Ljubljana Christmas Market. It’s a lovely walk through the old cobblestone streets to get there are many art galleries and museums in this area too. Hotel Mrak is only a few minutes away from the river and cool cafes like Tozd, or you can eat at the hotel as it’s known for its excellent breakfast.

If you are looking for budget accommodation and don’t mind staying in a hostel and sharing a bathroom, Hostel Tresor is in a brilliant location, steps from the Christmas markets, Preseren Square and the Triple Bridge. This won’t be for everyone, but it has the potential to make your winter break in Ljubljana very affordable. I visited this hotel last time I was in Ljubljana, and it’s a quiet and quirky hotel. Well worth it if you’re on a budget.
