Christmas Specialties in Graz
Verhackertesbrot: Savouring a slice of Verhackertesbrot is a must in Graz. It’s a Styrian specialty composed of finely chopped, smoked and seasoned bacon spread on fresh, crusty bread. Typically served as an appetiser, this delight paves the way for more traditional Austrian fare to follow.
Käferbohnen Salad: This Styrian salad uses scarlet runner beans – locally known as Käferbohnen – as its star ingredient. Tossed with pumpkin seed oil, cider vinegar, onions, and a sprinkling of sea salt, this simple salad is a vegetarian delight you’ll find in Graz.
Styrian Pot Roast (Steirisches Wurzelfleisch): Embrace the hearty flavours of Graz with Steirisches Wurzelfleisch, a Styrian pot roast. This soul-warming dish comprises tender beef simmered with root vegetables and is usually paired with freshly grated horseradish for that extra kick.
Styrian Pumpkin Soup: An ode to the region’s famed produce, Styrian pumpkin soup is a warming staple in Graz’s winter cuisine. Pureed pumpkin is simmered with herbs and spices, enriched with a dash of cream, and finished with a drizzle of Styrian pumpkin seed oil, bringing out a depth of flavour.
Palatschinken: Indulge your sweet tooth with Palatschinken, a thin crepe-like pancake that’s a favourite across Austria. In Graz, these are often filled with apricot jam or chocolate spread, rolled, and dusted with powdered sugar. Palatschinken also comes in savoury versions, making it a versatile treat for vegetarians.
Styrian Apple Cider (Steirischer Apfelwein): Rounding off a Grazian feast is Steirischer Apfelwein, a local apple cider. This mildly sparkling and refreshingly tart drink provides the perfect counterpoint to the rich flavours of Graz’s Christmas cuisine.
Food at the Christmas Market
Grilled Sausages: A staple at any Austrian Christmas market, the aroma of grilled sausages wafts through the air in Graz. From Bratwurst to spicy Hungarian-style Debrecener, these meaty delights are a must-try. Paired with mustard and freshly baked bread, it’s comfort food at its finest.
Bauernkrapfen: These Austrian doughnuts, known as Bauernkrapfen, are a deliciously indulgent treat. Deep-fried until golden brown and sprinkled generously with powdered sugar, they’re often filled with apricot jam. A bite into its warm, fluffy interior reveals a sweet, tangy filling.
Pretzels: No Christmas market would be complete without pretzels. In Graz, these twisted delights come in all sizes and variations. From the traditional salty pretzel to ones generously topped with melted cheese or sweet ones dusted with cinnamon and sugar, there’s a pretzel to suit all palates.
Glühwein: Keep the winter chill at bay with a steaming mug of glühwein. This mulled wine, typically made with red wine steeped in an array of spices and citrus, is a quintessential Christmas market drink. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your stroll around Graz’s festive stalls.
Roasted Chestnuts: A classic snack, roasted chestnuts offer a taste of Christmas nostalgia. Vendors roast these on open fires, filling the air with a distinctive, comforting aroma. Warm, creamy and slightly sweet, they’re a delightful bite-sized treat for the frosty weather.
Maroni: Another Graz Christmas market staple is Maroni, or candied almonds. Coated in a sweet, caramelised shell, these nuts offer a satisfying crunch with each bite. Their sweet scent lingers in the air, enticing visitors to stop for a taste.
Lebkuchen: Finally, be sure to sample Lebkuchen, a traditional German gingerbread cookie that’s found its way to Graz’s Christmas markets. Rich in spices, sweetened with honey, and often decorated with icing or almonds, these festive cookies encapsulate the spirit of the season.
What to Buy
Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil: Graz, being the capital of Styria, is well known for its pumpkin seed oil, often referred to as ‘green gold’. The oil is cold-pressed from pumpkin seeds, giving it a distinctive nutty flavour. It’s a versatile culinary gift and a delightful souvenir for food enthusiasts.
Handmade Candles: Alongside food, I’ve seen exquisitely crafted candles at the Christmas markets in Graz. Ranging from small votives to large, intricate designs, these candles make thoughtful gifts. You might even find ones scented with festive fragrances such as cinnamon or pine.
Pottery: Hand-thrown pottery pieces, whether it’s a delicate teacup or a robust serving dish, are another charming find. Graz’s Christmas markets provide a platform for local artisans to display their crafts, and pottery is always a popular choice. It’s a practical gift that also adds a touch of Styrian charm to any home.
Wooden Toys: Traditional wooden toys are a nod to a time before mass-produced plastic items. Skillfully crafted and painted by hand, these toys often depict animals or festive characters and are a joy for children and collectors alike.
Lederhosen and Dirndls: Graz’s Christmas markets also provide a platform for regional clothing. Authentic Lederhosen and Dirndls, traditional Alpine clothing, can be found among the stalls. These beautifully embroidered garments make for a unique souvenir or gift.
Seasonal Decorations: Let’s not forget the plethora of seasonal decorations. Handmade wreaths, delicate glass baubles, wooden nativity figures, and advent calendars are just some of the festive decor you’ll find. These items, often crafted by local artisans, will bring a touch of Graz’s Christmas spirit to your home.
